The Gas Station #8
Topshop returns, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy has been cast, and the truth about SPF moisturiser
Hi all,
My son has been sick and I’m writing this on three-and-a-half hours of sleep. The joy of spring? I don’t know her. But Lucy Dacus’ new album has been getting me through the day.
In today’s edition we also have the TV show I’m most looking forward to this spring, how the Olsens get their perfect boho waves, noisy neighbour sex, and the best parenting thing I’ve read in ages, among plenty of other fun stuff.
Style
Topshop is teasing a comeback. Will be interesting to see if they can reclaim relevancy but it seems like a long shot? But with 12 million followers still on Instagram, there’s probably still a market. Cheeringly Sir Philip Green no longer owns it, having sold it in 2021. I witnessed firsthand Green’s atrocious behaviour - he once called me at work to scream down the phone at me when I wrote an unflattering review of the Kardashian Kollection for Dorothy Perkins in a national newspaper (I might have called it “Komplete Krap”, which I thought was being generous).
Enjoyed this piece on office-style influencers who work ‘regular’ jobs but also showcase their outfits in boardrooms and at reception. Apparently it’s helping younger people understand how to dress for work since they started their careers during covid. While I’m thrilled that young people are learning how to pair some trousers with an inoffensive top, doesn’t this drive managers mad?
I’m guessing most of the style writers on Substack don’t have all that much in common with Meghan Sussex but they certainly have something now: the Duchess has just signed up to ShopMy, the preferred affiliate marketing programme of your favourite fashion newsletters. Of course, some outlets have been faux outraged at this news but she’s basically an influencer at this point so it makes sense really. Still, it’s certainly sent a ripple of amusement through the Substack community.
Jeanne Damas’s Rouje has just unveiled its collaboration with supermodel Helena Christensen and it has some nice spring pieces. It’s making me want to be one of those women who tots around town in a mid length dress and kitten heels when the warmer weather arrives. Tbc.
